The Omnipresence of Technology

1. Introduction

This is the start to something of a loose manifesto about the subject matter I have established for this site. I should probably make this more scholarly than I will but I want this to just be a place where my thoughts can be journaled without the stress of correct formatting or academic citation. If I plan to do more serious work with this material I will, of course, cite things properly. I am mostly planning to draw on the ideas of serveral individuals who have been incredibly inspiring to me such as Douglas Rushkoff, Neil Postman, Marshall Mcluhan, Aldous Huxley, Kalle Lasn, Daniel Quinn, and others I will name in future posts. Lastly, I hope these are able retain consistency and intelligibility but we will see.

Through these small essays I want to parse out my thoughts about the nearing threat of people becoming totally enveloped by digital technology. While humanity has been surrounded by technology forever, only through the web have we created a sort of alternate world that satisfies so many different kinds of desires and that allures nearly everyone to a serious extent. Even 10-20 years ago it would be crazy to think that the average teen would spend several hours a day on a mobile device in addition to computer and TV time. I think we're at a really interesting point where almost everyone has realized how dependent they are on this technology in some respect but are still unable to quit. Things will probably change drastically in the near-future in this regard, hopefully for the better. I will be trying to dig at this problem through various themes in hopes of understanding this social dilemma more than I do now. Hope you enjoy the ride!
